The Kasari Nexus by Richard Phillips is a continuation of the Rho Agenda dystopian series. Jennifer Smythe, twin sister of Mark Symthe, Heather McFarland Smythe have different, yet enhanced mental and physical capacities because of headsets they used from a space ship that they discovered in a New Mexican cave . It turns out that the trio aided by Jack Gregory and his wife Janet price and their son who also accidentally became enhanced with special mental powers as a baby, are trying to save Earth from an invasion by the Kasari people from another galaxy. The Kasari initially appear to bring peaceful technology that is helpful for their captives, Then through their own technology they assimilate and enslave the captives for their own military purposes. It is fast paced and I appreciated the fact that the author Richard Phillips has a military background, is also a physicist, worked at the Los Alemos national laboratory and also at Lawrence Livermore National Laborary in Berkeley so his storyline has more of a ring of possibility than other writers who lack his technical background. I am enthralled with the series and know that space IS the final frontier so books that even have a potential for future reality have my attention. If you like space and it multitude of possibilities this series is for you.
I am not going to comment on content or write a big synopsis so much as go back to the original Rho Agenda. As a lifelong (70 yrs old) fan of science fiction I felt that trilogy was the best I had ever read. I bought all 3 books for kindle.
I then encouraged my husband to "read" them. He was resistant as he actually listened to books on tape exclusively and was hard of hearing. Finding a reader he could understand was often difficult. He finally agreed and I ordered the first book on cd for him. The first time he listened we were camping and he stopped his player after about 10 minutes. I asked him what the problem was. He replied that the story was moving around too much. I replied that the author was just setting up the plot line and characters and he needed to listen awhile longer. He turned his machine back on and listened through lunch and dinner. He turned it on first thing the next day and when his machine turned off he looked at me and said where's book two. That's how I felt reading The Kasari Nexus. The characters and storylines are totally compelling. I've preordered books two and three.
I've also read the "Dead" books. We now have them all on cd, kindle, and iBooks. Yes, I paid for them in all 3 formats.
Thank you Richard Phillips for so many hours of reading enjoyment, thought reflection, and anticipation.
Here is yet another brilliant book from Mr. Phillips - full of vigour, action, true dilemmas and hard decisions, excellent characters, defining experiences and his famous „Oh, snap!” moments which just spice up the entire story, add entire new dimensions or give a whole new meaning to what has transpired...
I find it a truly enjoyable read, and I heartily recommend not only this book, but also his „Rho Agenda” and „Rho Agenda Inception” series (I have read the entire Rho Agenda at least three times, and this is very uncommon for me these days, as my time is always at a premium). For those who have already read the series, all I can say is that „The Kasari Nexus” is just the perfect sequel to an excellent series, and that you are going to enjoy every minute of it -D.
The Rho Agenda trilogy by Richard Phillips is one of my favorite science fiction reads. It is original and exciting with 3 main characters that are well developed; you care about them because their behavior and feelings are true to life. The Rho Inception trilogy is also a fun read; less character driven and more an ongoing thriller with a small side of SciFi.
Now comes the Kasari Nexus, a Rho Agenda Assimilation book, that Mr. Phillips has written as a mashup of the two previous trilogy’s genres along with the addition of space opera, much like a blockbuster summer movie. While the story develops in different settings with a cast of characters from all 6 former books along with new characters, the author loses the ability to create the deep character-reader bond from the first books but surpasses the action-adventure excitement of the Rho Inception books. I must say, I miss the bond with Jennifer, Mark and Heather that I first developed. However, the story is so well written, so engaging, and finally so fast paced that I quickly realized that resistance is futile, I, the reader, was being assimilated by this new trilogy.
Richard Phillips is one of our best writers of SiFi today and The Kasari Nexus is a terrific addition to the genre.
I was happy to finally get my pre-order copy of the book so I could leave a five star review.
This is one of the best science fiction books I've read in years, and I've read a few. The story has many surprises and they start off at the very beginning. I have always liked the multiple story lines and multiple perspectives, because it's nice to wonder "what will happen to Character A next?!?!" while thoroughly enjoying Character Bs story.
It was good enough to make me want to reread the previous Rho novels (I am finished with 4 of the 6). They are excellent as well, so if you haven't read them, treat yourself and do so.
